I Didn't Know

I watched you as you went about your business.
You seemed to have your future well in hand.
I must admit I felt a trace of envy.
I thought you had the world at your command.

I didn't know the pain that you were feeling,
Or that your world was caving in on you.
And so I didn't offer you compassion,
As daily all your fears and troubles grew.

Forgive me for my seeming lack of caring.
I would have tried to help, had I but known.
If I had listened to your heart's deep pleading,
More love and tenderness I would have shown.

But now it is too late to try to reach you,
For you are far beyond all earthly care.
I'm sorry that I failed you so completely,
And of your mental state was unaware.

With tears I've prayed, and asked the Lord to help me,
To know when others hurt--to be aware,
So I can share the precious love of Jesus,
And help them find and trust His tender care.
